1992 has passed and the 1993 season has gotten underway. Players have been drafted, traded, retired, and increased or decreased through training camp. I will take a look at evaluating the talent of a great group of PGs that currently represent the NBA.
Top PG Scorers
1. Hershey Hawkins - Was an All-Star last year and has a 20.7 PPG average. He sports an A- in outside shooting.
2. Gary Payton - Has seen his scoring avg increase from 17.5 to 22.5 (18.4 for career) and he can hurt you both inside (B) and outside (A-)
3. Tim Hardaway - An All-Star and 1st teamer, the killer crossover has got Hardaway open looks and he's averaging over 18 PPG in each season. B- inside and B outside provides great balance
4. Kevin Johnson - Despite not being a top scoring option on a deep Suns team, Kevin is averaging 16 PPG and like Hardaway, can score all over the court (B inside and outside)
5. Mark Price - Price makes this list currently averaging 16.5 PPG and shooting well in all areas (over 40% from 3, 87% FT, 45% FG) and sports an A in outside shooting, among the best for all PGs
Top PG Defenders
1. Dee Brown - 1st team All Defense in 1992, 2.5 steals per game that year while currently at 2.1 for 1993. Dee sports an A+ Def, and with A Pot, he might be a great defender for many years to come.
2. Mookie Blaylock - Right there with Dee, 2.1 steals last year, while improving to 2.6 so far this year. Was named 2nd team All Defense last year. Like Dee, he sports an A+ Def, however, his Pot currently is a C so it remains to be seen if he can maintain that defensive rating over the course of several years.
3. Rod Strickland - The last PG starter with an A+ Def rating, Rod has average 2 steals per game last year and this year.
4. John Stockton - Has increased his steals rate from 2.1 to 2.5 since the 92 season. With an A rating, he's only a slight step behind the elite.
5. Hershey Hawkins - Has good size for a PG with an A rating and currently averaging 2.4 steals per game, edging out Kevin Johnson for the last spot on this list.
Top Potential/Youth PGs
1. Gary Payton - An easy choice with A Pot as a 25 year old that has A- in 3 different categories. An All-league 2nd teamer already.
2. Kenny Anderson - 23 years old, A Pot played in the All rookie game. He already has 5 career triple doubles to his name, A for Han and Def while B for In scoring.
3. Dee Brown - Another A Pot young kid (24 years old) with Def and Han already maxed at A+. Averaging 11.2 PPG this year as he continues to improve his scoring despite not being one of the top 3 scoring options.
4. Nick Van Exel - Has made a huge splash in his rookie campaign averaging 19.1 PPG, 10.9 APG (league leader), 4.7 RPG while shooting 43% from 3pt, 80% FT and compiling 13 double doubles in only 18 games. Doesn't have any attributes in the A range yet, but his future is still bright with his A Pot
5. Sam Cassell - The 4th pick in the draft, Cassell also has A Pot to look forward to as he continues to develop. Already averaging 15.4 PPG, 7.6 APG, and a great 6.2 RPG, he's looking solid. His lack of defense and no attributes in the A range like Van Exel are some improvements he'll hope to make as he continues to develop.
Top Overall PGs
1. Tim Hardaway - Currently listed as a SG for his team, Hardaway still is the mold of a true PG and won the All-league 1st team award in 1992. This All-star career averages are 18.5 PPG, 9.8 APG, 4.9 RPG, and 1.7 SPG. At only 27 with B Pot, Hardaway might not yet be at his full talent level.
2. Gary Payton - If enough hasn't already been said about Payton, career numbers of 18.4 PPG, 8.3 APG, 5.1 RPG, and 1.5 SPG rank him close to Hardaway's stats.
3. John Stockton - If 13 PPG, 9.6 APG, 3.8 RPG, 2.1 SPG aren't enough for you, how about the fact he's an NBA champion? His attributes back up him being worthy of this ranking as well.
4. Kenny Anderson - Maybe a slight surprise, but Kenny's potential and current attributes make him hard to leave off this list. 14.2 PPG, 9.3 APG, 4.9 RPG, and 1.8 SPG in his career are solid numbers for this 23 year old.
5. Mookie Blaylock - His assist to turnover ratio is outstanding (8.1 to 2.2 per game), his defense is superb, and he's capable of scoring (13.3 PPG). All-around player who beat out some tough honerable mentions for the last spot on this list (Strickland, Hawkins, D. Brown, Van Exel, Price, K. Johnson, Murdock)
