1. Who has the best starting 5 in the league and why?
Donatello2424: Probably the Hornets. 3 of their starters have A defense, 1 has A-, and one has B-, which is ridiculous. 4 of their starters can burn you with their scoring. Their only downside is their lack of many long range shooters. They are a strictly inside team.
Mops: I'd have to say the Hornets here. They have 3 guys in the starting lineup who have A- or better inside scoring with two big time bigs in Duckworth and Mourning. Duckworth has a second life all of a sudden and is a damn good stud. Mourning is a young pup thats got the chance to work with a guy just as good down low in Duckworth. Oh and then there is an even younger Larry Johnson...PG is a tad weak with the Hornets standards but its still really good for a league wide standard.
Boom: Charlotte Hornets, Up front they have 3 All – Stars in Kevin Duckworth, Alonzo Mourning, and Larry Johnson and they have 2 solid veterans anchoring the backcourt in Dell curry and Muggsy Bogues who is currently leading the league in assists.
Bcordell: I think Charlotte has the best starting 5 in the league because with Zo,LJ and Duckworth you have a dominant inside game that many teams can't rival because of the depth of the inside game. While you have Shaq,Dream and Malone but they are just one player while Charlotte has three guys who dominate the game inside at any particular time. While their guards are not flashy they don't need to be with the frontcourt. Their guards score enough to keep teams honest and they don't turn the ball over a ton.
Brophdogg88: Best starting 5 in the league has to go to....Seattle, with their acquisition of Seikaly and Harper, they have an amazing starting 5. Harper is an excellent defender, Seikaly can pour in 25 points a game, to go with Shaun Kemp and Gary Payton's excellent defense and scoring capabilities and you have the best starting 5 in the league with 5 players capable of scoring 20+ points when you take Kukoc into account. His size creates mismatches and he is a very capable defender. The versatility they have with Kukoc Harper and Payton all being able to handle the ball makes it so they can hit you from anywhere at anytime.
Gregspechtismyhero: Nuggets:It's hard to argue with Jackson, Williams, Rice, Ellis, Mutombo when they've won 10 in a row
Jeb: It has to be the hornets with Duckworth Zo and Grandma up front, although Bogues dosnt score he gets the ball to his big guys like a true point man should all without looking to take over the scoring.
Briarduck: SUPERSONICS excellent players at each starting position that defend dish and score…and are young! What’s not to like?
H.M. Charlotte Hornets same as above but lack the superstar PG.
Pudgejeff: It's between the Sonics, Bulls, and Jazz. The sonics are top Heavy with Seikally, Kemp and GP and have solid players at the 2 and 3 in Harper and Kucoc but they don't have enough handles so they don't create for each other enough. The Bulls have handles all over the place in Threatt, Price, and Pip with Hot Rod and Wayman holding down the middle. The Jazz have handles in Douglass and stocton while having the MVP down low to go with Daugherty. The Hawks got closer with adding Paxson to DRob, CRob and Mook but Penny is just too young right now. I'm gonna have to give it to Chicago due to Pip and also Price being ridiculous this year.
2. Who has the best overall team in the league (including their bench) and why?
Donatello2424: Yeah I will be a homer and say me. Yes it is easy to say that the Hornets have a great team, but I’m not a huge fan of their bench. My bench contains the likes of Kleine and Thompson who are both solid rebounders and defenders. Mckey is a sleeper SF and Michael Williams can play both guard spots and is a very good defender.
Mops: Hornets again here. Look at the defense on that team. Their entire team is A- or better at defense but 3 players and one of them is a B+. That is just insane. Not only do they have tons of scoring options but almost every player is a shut down defender. They are really good. Really good.
Boom: Charlotte Hornets, they have the best record in the game and they have guys like Jerome Kersey, and Sarunas Marciulionis coming off the bench.
Bcordell: I feel that Utah has the best team in the league because not only do they have a good frontcourt led by Malone and Daugherty. But they also have a really solid backcourt led by stockton and Douglas. This makes them have a really balanced where you have 4 or 5 guys capable of having really good games on a consistent basis and this makes them really difficult to play against. My feeling is Utah has a slightly better bench then Charlotte I applauld the Utah gm for realizing that Championship teams need solid benches. in order to be at title level you need a really good bench.
Brophdogg88: I am gonna say the Orlando Magic, as their bench and great players make them amazing. They have a hole at the wing, but they have solid defenders, and the players coming off the bench more than make up for that. Although they will have to rely on Shaq+Ewing for alot of their offense, thats not a bad combo to rely on. Ceballos is solid at the SF position, and Blue Edwards is nice as well, but the big thing is the replacements they can bring off the bench. Every player has the capability to slow the opposing team, meaning Shaq, Ewing and the rest of the Orlando starters can rest on the bench.
Gregspechtismyhero: I'd have to say the Suns. They might not have the highest scorers, but they have consistency. And any time a team has a group of players on the same level, they just mesh so much better. And it seems like no matter what mops does, he keeps winning.
Jeb: The Suns strike my eye, starting at the top of thier roster with the svelte Oliver Miller and ending with Kenya Wilkins their 15 man roster only has one man who hasnt yet played and everyone who plays puts in good time
Briarduck: Chicago Bulls with one superstar, solid supporting cast and good depth prove that you don’t need a team of superstars to win! Scotty Pippen (pts 30.9) is the engine the makes this all work the solid supporting cast includes PGs Mark Price (21.9/5.1/8.0/2.0) and Sedale Threatt (16.1/4.7/7.6/2.2), PF/C Wayman Tisdale (17.3 9.8 2.0), J.R. Reid (12.8/ 7.9/ 1.3), Hot Rod Williams (9.0/ 7.8/ 2.1) and Matt Geiger (8.0/ 7.3). Depth at PG and in the post…well done Chicago but can they repeat?
Pudgejeff: Hornets, Hornets, Hornets. There big, they defend up and down the roster and can score from all over. If Mugsy were a threat to score they'd be ridiculous.
3. Who is the one player you would like on your team who may be overlooked by most of the league (please no Shaqs or Dreams)?
Donatello2424: Moses. He is 39 and plays on the crappy Bucks, but he can still play. 1.4 bpg in 15 minutes! He would be around 3 bpg at 30 mpg…and he is 39!
mops: Doug Edwards from the Bucks. The guy is a 20/10 player and his contract is still under 500k. That's insane! The Bucks have him for one more year on a 3-year 2nd round rookie contract. He's stuck on a bad team. If he was on a winning team he'd prolly be in contention for an All-League team spot and the Bucks GM would be getting a lot of offers for the guy.
Boom: Dale Davis
Bcordell: The player who I would want on my team team who may be overlooked by most of the league is a guy who I do have and that is petrovic. Not to sound Like a homer but this guy is having a monster season but it doesn't seem like he gets mentioned as a superstar when his numbers say he is. While yes me team is not having a great season if I didn't have him we would be a lot worse then we are. I just think he needs more recognition.
Brophdogg88: You take away contracts age etc...and all your left with is an overlooked player? I say Mark Price, PG for the Bulls, he is shooting an amazing % from the field and behind the arc and is an excellent defender. I don't think too many people are noticing his 52% from the field and 48% from the 3 point line. That is outstanding, and although he is at the peak of his career looking down the hill, he still is among the best PG's in the league.
Gregspechtismyhero: I'm gonna have to homer this one and say Dee Brown, he is the life blood of my team. He's had 4 or 5 games with over 20 assists, and has come up big and scored over 30 in 10 games, has been POTG 46 times, 65 double doubles, and 2 triple doubles. And yet, did not play in the All-Star game.
Jeb: There are a few young men who will be and are stars, Wallace of the Blazers and Big Z on the bucks who really get over looked. I'd take sheed at the moment due to the game he boasts at a young age
Briarduck: I just acquired him, “Stanley Roberts”…but aside from Stanley,
Pudgejeff: Jeff Hornacek. He does everything. He defends, passes, scores, shoots high percentages, doesn't turn it over too much. And you don't ever hear anything about him.
4. Who is the one player on your team who you wouldn't trade, but who isn't your best player?
Donatello2424: Toni Kukoc. He fell in that draft and I expect him to be loaded with potential. He might be older than some but he is on his way to becoming a great starters.
Mops: Marcelo Nicola SF 22 6'10'' 240 B- B C- B+ C+ B
WHO? He was some 2nd round scrub who I think started out with all Cs. He's gone up in potential and he's also gone up in a lot of areas. He will be one I am looking at for down the road and hoping I can resign him as he looks to be a good player possibly.
Boom: Alonzo Mourning, there aren’t very many good young bigs in the league.
Bcordell: For me the answer to this question is Chris Dudley. They guy is not flashy he is a guy I can count on to get me a double-double almost every game. He will also average one over a whole season. So while he is not my best player he is a guy who is very important to my team due to consistency and not needing the ball a ton to be productive.
Brophdogg88: Nick Anderson, The man can score, defend, and even pass when he needs to. He has the ability to put up 30+ on any given night, while locking down the opposing teams best player. Last year he was one of the more dominant players in the league, but when I acquired Coleman, he became my second best player. Heck he is having a down year to me, and is putting up 24.9 points. The best part though and something that people may overlook, is the fact that he is pulling down 7.5 rebounds a game as an SG, which helps alot, as I don't have to worry so much about rebounding.
Gregspechtismyhero: Michael Adams. He's an extremely talented player, but lives in the shadow of Steve Smith and Dee Brown. If I can't re-sign Smith, he will become a HUGE asset to my team.
Jeb: n/a
Briarduck: “Sean Rooks” solid PF/C and puts up great numbers and value wise is untradeable. If I were to give him more minutes he would be a beast but I have 4 guys just like him and under much bigger contracts!
Pudgejeff: Penny. He's my favorite player of all time and my childhood hero. Not to mention he can play the one, two and three and has great vision. Can't wait for TC baby.
5. Who is one player you are most looking forward to and what should his rating be coming into the league?
Donatello2424: The Kandy Man. Why? He was a huge bust, so what better way to throw the league for a loop then make him a beast? People will be cautious about drafting him due to his real life self. B C- D+ B- C+ A with 100 potential.
Mops: There are a few players I am excited for because I have a massive love/hate relationship towards them.
KG was one of my favorite players growing up and he's going to have a butt load of potential, however lately I really wanna make him suck because he's such a D-Bag now on the Celtics as he is always trash talking, acting like a fool, and being a complete tool.
Timmy Ducnan is another player I really wanna get into the league. Guys just good all over. I hate him not cause hes good or a D-bag but because the Spurs always would eliminate my Suns from the playoffs and I really wanted a Duncan on my team. Oh and hes good.
Boom: Brandon Roy B- B- B- B- C+ A
Bcordell: From my standpoint the answer is Kevin Garnett because the guy for being in highschool is a manchild. Especially having success playing against the bull players. I think his ratings should be some of if not the highest ratings in the game.
Brophdogg88: Tim Duncan. he is one of the most fundamentally sound players of all time, and is an unsung hero. When you think of the best players of all time, Duncan is not a flashy name, but how many players enter the league and put up the kind of numbers he did in his rookie season? 21.1 points 11.9 rebounds 2.7 assists and 2.5 blocks is amazing for a 5 year vet, much less a rookie. Then iin his first playoff game he goes for 32 points 10 rebounds.
I put him at a B C- C- B+ B A potential
Gregspechtismyhero: Kevin Garnett. He should be A's everywhere, and then add a new catagory in which he is an A for badassness.
Jeb: Kevin
B- C C B- B A
Garnett is a beast and we all know it so why not make him grow up like he did in real life
Briarduck: Tim Duncan, should go down as one of the best PF to ever play the game and would be equal to landing Jason Kidd…I would expect Duncan to have numbers very close to B+ C B- B+ B+ A…
Pudgejeff: Dwight Howard. He's a stud. I say he should start off B+ inside C outside C- Handles A Defense A+ Rebound. Don't tell me he's not by far the best rebounder in the game and he was his rookie year. He'll come in at 18 so he should have and A in Potential with the highest # available in the actual ratings for it.
6. Blocking or stealing, which one do you feel is more important and why?
Donatello2424: Blocking. From experience I just find that when my team is struggling and I trade for a guy who is a beastly shot blocker, my team does much better. The way I like to play my team, having a guy who can man the post and play great defense and rebound is important. Part of doing that is blocking shots.
Mops: Blocking. I think Blocks improve your chances on defense for whatever reason. There is also a nice sight when you see some guy just get swatted. Its a pretty thing. I also think it effects teams scoring more so if you have better blockers than stealers. Plus who likes a thief?
Boom: Probably stealing since your not guaranteed the possession when you block a shot.
Bcordell: I think that blocking is more important though both can be a game-changer, I feel that blocking is more important because if you have a good shot blocker it allows the rest of your team to be more aggresive on defense because if you make a mistake on defense a shot blocker can bail you out. Whereas if you are agressive on defense without a shot blocker then you could be giving up layups all game.
Brophdogg88: Blocking, Steals are great but gambling for steals can leave a player out of position for an open shot or drive to the basket. Blocks can to but a player who can block changes the game so much more, he intimidates opponents coming into the lane, creating poor shots etc...
Gregspechtismyhero: Blocking, kuz it's sick when you get a block and it's way more demoralizing.
Jeb: BPG I always love the big guys simple as that
your D can gamble if they know they have a big behind them to fix their mistakes
Briarduck: Steals I think are more important because they usually lead to fast break points where Blocks are intimidation and demoralizing…I rather have the points!
Pudgejeff: I really don't know. This is one of the parts of this game that I'm still having a hard time getting a grasp on. I'm gonna go with steals cause it's an automatic turnover and a block shot can go out of bounds or to the other team. On the other hand a pair of posts that can block shots theoretically should be able to make up for weaker defenders on the wing by changing and blocking shots when they come inside but I don't know if thats how the sim works or not.
7. Bucks, Cavs, or Warriors, who is worse and why?
Donatello2424: The Cavs. Yes they have a lot of picks, but those are from playoff teams. The other teams have good young guys to build around. GS has Marshall and Spree. The Bucks have big Z, Barry, and Edwards. The Cavs have nadda.
Mops: Well, I think the Bucks might be taking a very slow approach to building up a good team. They do have two good pieces, Big Z and Doug Edwards. I think the plan for trading that first last year to the pistons for this years backfired but it was a risky move with high reward or high fail. Cavs are exempt, the gm before him was awful. Warriors are just blowing them up right now.
Boom: Bucks, the other teams have multiple first round picks headed there way.
Bcordell: I feel that the Warriors are worse just because I don't really know which direction their gm is trying to take them. And if you are rebuilding I think you need to know the direction to go. And he traded his good players for less then there worth. The cleveland gm is trying to acquire lots of picks through trades which is smart. And milwaukee has some young talent.
Brophdogg88: Warriors, all they have is Lucious Harris and Latrell Sprewell. Nothing Else...and Lucious can't play defense worth a Damn. A D+ defender is terrible, and that?!? Yikes! They are being outscored by an absurd 15 points per game. It will be a large rebuilding process, but, Luckily for them and the other two teams they have there own draft pick this year.
Gregspechtismyhero: Bucks, they only have two players averaging double digits.
Jeb: Cavs their best player is 31, they are -$19,169,784 over the cap and well they suck
Briarduck: 3. Warriors: Have a couple great young players, their picks this year and a stock pile of picks for next year and manageable contracts, Warriors are in good shape!
2. Bucks: Lots of picks and manageable contracts …contender for worst team
1. Cavs: a few notable players, have picks and manageable contracts, in a competition for the worst team in the league these guys take it. Of their notable players none are superstars nor stars so they have some work to do!
Pudgejeff: Cavs are the worst. No youth, no good picks, no cap space, no stars. Just terrible. It's not even close. The warriors aren't in a terrible position. They're set to move on starting in 96 and will have picks and cap space to do it, and depending if they decide to give in to spree and max him out or not they could have a superstar wing to build around. The Bucks have lots of cap right now and some decent youth along with there own picks. They're not gonna be great soon but could make the playoffs in the next few years.
8. A good big man (Dream, shaq, ewng, ect.) or a good wing (mj, pippen, petreovic)? Why?
Donatello2424: Really both, but for my argument I will say a good big man. I have had teams based around both, and the big man team did the best. He has a beast and could do everything and when I had only him, I made the playoffs. A good is important, since I have built teams that had 2 mvp type wings, but I need that balance. If you have a good wing, a good big is a must to take some pressure away from them. The chance a team has two lockdown defenders is slim.
Mops: I like a good wing who has A inside. Bigs are easy to find who can get you B or B+ inside but if you can find a wing who has an A to go along with that you are set for a long time. Having a guy who can be dominate inside and out is deadly.
Boom: Doesn’t really matter.
Bcordell: A good big man because if you have a good big man then you can build your team a round the big man and get the type of players you want. While a good wing can dominate a game without a good big man to support him teams can gear up to stop him because he has no help.
Brophdogg88: A good big man, easy. A wing is playing one on one, and can contribute points, slow down opposing wings and get some assists and maybe a steal or 3, but a good post is nearly unstoppable because all of his shots come right at the basket. A good post can affect not just his opponents shots but also a teammates if the teammate loses his man on a drive. Don't forget the rebounding either, a good post can create opportunities at the offensive end when a teammate misses by getting an offensive board. Now Obviously a wing can do this, but not nearly as effectively as a dominant Post. The post demands double teams and even triples in the paint, leaving him to kick the ball to an open player on the wing, while a lockdown defender can contain a dominant wing to some degree. You just aren't going to be able to stop a dominant post 1 on 1, they have it way to easy that close to the basket.
Gregspechtismyhero: Good big man. Like I said last time, nothing like a big Diesel to push around and intimidate everyone on the court. Having someone like that down low can really give their teammates confidence, and when they are double teamed, it opens up someone on the perimeter to deliver a demoralizing three pointer.
Jeb: Ive always built my team around big guys, 3 of them and then worked back... starting with the point then filling in the wings... its worked so far why fix it..
Briarduck: I’d always prefer a big man because they change the game defensively in a way a wing can’t…that being said I’d take MJ over any player in history (in real life) but SIM wise, Shaq’s or Wilt are my guys!
Pudgejeff: Post I think but only cause there's less of them and the drop from the top tier is so much more drastic than at the wing. And also because we're getting ready to go into an age where the good post dissapeared so if you can grab a good young one now he should be able to dominate as we get closer to the new millenia.
9. Who will be better the Raptors or the Grizzlies? Why?
Donatello2424: The Grizzlies. Bears can climb trees, Raptors can’t. So if I am being chased by a raptor I can jump in a lake or climb a tree and get away from it. If I chased by a bear, I am fucked.
Mops: Raps, because they dont have a GM yet,? I dunno. Its too early to tell since the entire teams will be erased.
Boom: No idea
Bcordell: I think the grizzlies will be better because with them already having a gm in place it allows them to have a plan early on as to how to they want to build their team. They can see who they can go for in fa and through the draft. Wheras toronto not having a gm hurts them in this regard.
Brophdogg88: Really there is no true way to judge this question, as we don't know the situation of the team, who they are going to get, what position each team will draft in. Both cities are nice, but in the end it is going to come down to who GM's the teams better, and I don't have an answer to that question as of now.
Gregspechtismyhero: Griz, because their GM is active But in all seriousness it all depends on the GM. They both have a sick amount of cap space, and if the GM can spend it wisely, they can end up like the Griz in UOSLR...losing 9 games haha
Jeb: grrrrrrrriiiiiizzzz because of me
Briarduck: I’ll say the Grizzlies but really until we see the lottery results and GMs decision making this is a crap shoot!
Pudgejeff: No clue. Gonna go with the Griz at this point cause they have a GM. I mean other than that how would we have any other sort of outlook on it.
10. Who is the best player who doesn't win awards and why?
Donatello2424: Shawn Kemp. He hasn’t made an all-star game and he is arguably a top 3 PF in the league both offensively and defensively. He doesn’t get any love due to Malone being in the same conference.
Mops: Doug Edwards. Cheap contract, good ratings, and he gets 20/10 every night. Just stuck on a shitty Bucks team.
Boom: Clyde Drexler, has to compete against Scottie Pippen and Larry Johnson in the east for All – Star votes.
Bcordell: The best player who doesn't win awards is my man Drazen because since my team isn't one of the top ones in the league he doesn't get any recognition for awards. I think he should get mvp consideration because think about how bad my team would be if I didn't have him. My team is respectable because of him.
Brophdogg88: Nice question, I am gonna say Patrick Ewing. He plays at a very high level, with 25 points and 13 rebounds a game this year, but because of the other elite Centers, such as Robinson, Mourning, Olajuwon, and even his own teammate Shaquille O'Neal, he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. The only recognition he has gotten is an All-Star game appearance in 1992, other than that nothing. He deserves better, but there isn't any room for him Maybe this year there will be
Gregspechtismyhero: Dee Brown, reasons from #3.
Jeb: No answer
Briarduck: PG Dee Brown of the Heat. He is a complete player but is over shadowed by others in his position and an average team record. Outstanding defensively (C+ B A+ A+ C- A) and an excellent scoring pass first PG (pts21.7 /4.7/ assists9.8/ stls2.3 .450 .828 .359).
Pudgejeff: Jeff Hornacek. He does eveything you could ask of a 2 guard and hasn't won a single award. He's been to back to back all-star games but never on any of all-NBA teams or defensive teams.
