As we approach the halfway point of the 1992-93 season we look back on the year from chilly Minnesota. The T-Wolves are one of the leagues most surprising teams. Despite being led by a young rookie in Christian Laettner and a front court that has an average age of 23 years they enter the second half of the year playing .500 ball and only 1/2 game out of the playoffs.
With a big move this year the playoffs are a strong possibility but with 15 million in cap space looming this summer expect a very active offseason. Entering next year the T-Wolves only have 1 player making more then 4 million a year on a .500 team in 2nd leading scorer Wayman Tisdale. Adding in a young player in the draft as well as other players with the large amount of cap space can lead to the T-Wolves becoming a force in the very strong Western Conference. Already this year the T-Wolves have defeated playoff teams in the Lakers(2x), Bulls, Blazers, Rockets and Sonics.
In other news around the league the 76ers are the biggest surprise as they sit in 1st place in the East with a very strong frontcourt. With some bold moves the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns look to make a huge jump in the second half and separate themselves in the Western Conference but the Jazz, Spurs and Lakers have other plans. Michael Jordan leads the MVP race with his staggering 35ppg. Rony Seikaly is right up there with his 26 ppg 13 rpg averages.
Despite having a very deep talented roster led by stars Dominique Wilkins and Shaq the Magic look to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year as they are on the outside looking in in the playoff race. Expect a late season push by the Magic.
Awards watch at the halfway point:
MVP:
Michael Jordan - Bulls
Rookie of the Year
Shaq - Magic
6th man of the Year
Tyrone Hill - Warriors
GM/Coach of the year
Briarduck- Detroit Pistons
