As we begin the 2nd season of our careers as GM's we look back on the year that has been and forward to the future ahead. Most every team has been active since we all began as GM's to start the 92-93 season. The teams that haven't been very active in the last year...
Knicks: The Knicks made their big moves in re-signing Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing to max deals this offseason. Both were All-Stars this past year and a vital part of the team's success but when they will be 36 and 38 respectively the Knicks will be paying close to 40mil just for those 2. Ouch!
Bullets: The Bullets stuck it out with the team they had and that got them the 2nd pick in the draft. They are off to another slow start but have some good young talent to go along with their re-signed center Pervis Ellison.
Mavericks: Stuck it out with the team they have and got Vin Baker. He has some promise but will he be a franchise player?
Spurs: Very inactive no matter who's the GM
Warriors: Just now looking to make some moves. Tried sticking it out with their young cheap team but has decided to go in another direction. Re-signing Hardaway was a good move though
Contenders
Suns: Somehow gained extra picks and talent, excellent work by their GM.
Magic - Picked up Dominique/Clyde to team with Shaq and getting Dee Brown to run the show. Great team now and as long as they have Shaq will be a great team in the future.
76ers Overachievers would be an understatement for this team last year. They went for broke trying to win the title and made it to the Conference Finals. Just hope they maintain their stay on top with the lack of picks in the future
Hornets - The big spender in the offseason re-signing Muggsy to go along with Terry Porter and several other PG's. They have the talent and youth but may need a few trades to spread it out and capitalize on the talent they have.
Bulls - An unreal amount of talent yet still didn't win the title. Went for broke just like the 76ers in giving up their picks but with Nique/Clyde/Pippen they have quite possibly the best trio in NBA history!! Will contend for years to come. Will the hard cap due them in though?
Pacers Built around Reggie he has yet to disappoint scoring in bunches from all over the court. A giant frontcourt and Detlef Schrempf provide a solid supporting cast
Nuggets - Built up an unreal and young frontline with Sabonis, Deke and Ellis. Pack, Jackson and Rauf make for a very athletic and talented backcourt that will distribute to all their players. They will be a force for years.
Rockets Another team that traded away a lot of picks to win now. They have a strong team built around Hakeem but might be just a step behind other teams like the Suns, Bulls and Jazz.
Jazz Only gave up a late 1st to get Brad Daugherty and went on to win the title. Beat out all other suitors and re-signed Karl Malone along with John Stockton to assure that the duo would stay together til the end of their careers. Then stole a likely top 5-10 pick from the Kings for their own pick.
Lakers - They have now built up an extremely strong front court with Divac and Seikaly. They may have overpaid but that won't come back to bite them for several years. The Lakers also have some decent trade bait in the 10mil expiring contract of Sedale Threat.
Sonics Just like the Nuggets they are built around a young nucleus but are ready to contend right now. Grabbing Kukoc in the draft was an absolute steal.
Undecided Future
Heat They have a decent team with Steve Smith and Michael Adams but do not have much cap space or youth. Look to be mediocre for the time being.
Nets Got stuck with some horrible contracts and have done their best to work their way out. Re-signing Drazen helps but they still have a ways to go before they reach the likes of the Bulls in the East
Cavaliers Were in 3rd place in the East and then decided to break up their team. They traded away some of their older players but then re-signed Mark Price to a max deal. Gained some draft picks but then traded away a future franchise PG in Terrell Brandon?
Bucks They have a lot of holes to fill but are still stuck with an aging and overpaid frontcourt. Eric murdock is an All-Star but surrounded by less then stellar talent.
Blazers Have some great building blocks in Rasheed Wallace and Cliff Robinson but traded away a ton of future picks and all of their other talent that surrounds them. Still an unsure direction for this team.
The Future
Celtics Have a great young duo in Nick Van Exel and Nick Anderson. They may not have too much talent around them but those 2 will be all league for the next decade.
Hawks Not much to look at right now but they will be drafting every other pick in the 1st round this year practically with 5 1st rounders. With good drafting they can become a contender immediately.
Pistons It can only get better right? Overpaying for Stojakovic may have been a mistake but they were able to trade all the bad boys in the twilight of their careers and picked up a bevy of picks for them. Adding in a top 3 pick to go along with Mashburn will help bring back Detroit Basketball!!
Clippers Good now but will get better as Danny Manning does. They were able to go from the worst handled team with a massive salary cap to being under the cap in just a year. Unbelievable work by them and managed to get better along the way.
Kings In serious need of some frontcourt help but with 5 rookies and 2 1st rounders this year and a re-signed Mitch Richmond they have a chance to move their way up very quickly
Timberwolves!!!
Built around Christian Laettner and JR Rider they have great depth and still some room under the cap. Going 2 deep at every position with 2 young centers in Longley and Laettner and Tisdale and Maxey in the front court. They also have Loy Vaught and Lionel Simmons at SF. Byron Scott brings some veteran leadership backing up JR Rider at SG and Rod Strickland and his A+ handles and defense mans the PG duties. 9 of their rotation players are still locked in to rookie contracts and an average starting age of just 25 the Twolves look to make the playoffs not only this year but look to contend for a title for the next 10.
Ouch!
