Top Rookies for 1993/94 From the Detroit Free Press
1. Nick Van Exel PG Pts16.9 Reb5.5 Assist9.3 Stls1.4
One of the bigger surprises in the draft, not that he’s wasn’t supposed to be great but that he performed at such a high level as a rookie! All-Star Rookie Game Participant, All-Star Game Participant, Rookie of the Year, All-League Second Team and All-Rookie Team, what a year for Mr. Van Exel! You have to wonder just where his ceiling is?
2. Jamal Mashburn SF Pts19.1 Rebs5.9 Assist3.4 Stls1.2
Taken first over all comes with some responsibility to perform and Jamal did! Coming to a team with zero support players and having to be the man is tough, coming in and performing the way he did is another thing…well done Mr. Mashburn! All-Star Rookie Game Participant and All-Rookie Second Team! The Pistons have assured Jamal that things are changing very soon so look out for Jamal to have another great year as a sophomore!
3. Arvydas Sabonis C Pts14.4 Rebs7.4 Assist2.6 Stls0.7 Blks0.9
Great value pick at 12, there aren’t too many 27 year old rookies and there aren’t many with the reputation and international experience that “Saba” has and then to deliver on that rep, All-Star Rookie Game Participant, Sixth Man of the Year and All-Rookie Team! He showed why mother Russia is so proud of him we look forward to his second campaign!
4. Vin Baker PF Pts20.7 Rebs5.9 Assist1.9
Solid big man with a promising future, we expect him to have more rebounds as a sophomore but 20.7 points a game is excellent for his first year in the league! All-Star Rookie Game Participant and All-Rookie Team, expect a 20/10 by his second or third year!
5. Sam Cassell PG Pts15.9 Rebs6.3 Assist7.2 Stls1.1
Second best PG taken in this years draft. All-Star Rookie Game Participant, Rookie Game MVP and All-Rookie Second Team. Showed in the rookie game that he can play with the best and excel by winning the MVP!
6. Toni Kukoc SF Pts15.3 Rebs6.6 Assist2.9 Stls0.8
Excellent pick at 15, you won’t find much better value in any draft at 15, its funny how some players slip in a draft for whatever reason. Solid numbers across the board, All-Star Rookie Game Participant and All-Rookie Team
7. Calbert Chaeney SG Pts18.8 Rebs6.3 Assist2.9 Stls0.8
Performed like a lottery pick that Showed the ability to pass well out of the post and is already a polished scorer out of the post. All-Star Rookie Game Participant and All-Rookie Team.
8. Doug Edwards PF Pts17.3 Rebs6.7 Assist2.1
The surprise pick of the draft! How does a guy with this type of talent slip to the 5th pick of the second round? All-Star Rookie Game Participant and All-Rookie Second Team…well done we look forward to your sophomore campaign!
