1994 Draft Review
by the Detroit Free Press
Our Mock draft
1. Chris Webber
2. Jason Kidd
3. Grant Hill
4. Anferne Hardaway
5. Glenn Robinson
6. Juwan Howard
7. Brian Grant
8. Jalen Rose
9. Eddie Jones
10. Lamond Murray
11. Wesley Person
12. Sharone Wright
13. Donyell Marshall
14. Charlie Ward
15. Khalid Reeves
16. Eric Piatkowski
17. Clifford Rozier
18. Aaron McKie
Who Teams Picked…
1. Bullets…Chris Webber PF 6'11'' 260 21 B+ C+ C B+ B- A
Team Needs SF and C
Scout Take” Weber is the first in the next wave of big men entering the league. Big. Fast. Athletic. Versatile. He's not the typical strong, bulky, slow footed big man that the league is used to right now. Weber can defend 3 positions, shoot the outside shot, rebound, dunk, and block shots. Will battle for #1 overall.”
Our Take: Bullets went in to this draft needing a SF and a C after the lottery the choice was easy…Chris Webber and number one over all pick and a true franchise caliber player will change their franchise for the next decade!
2. Hawks…Anferne Hardaway PG 6'7'' 200 21 B- B- B C C+ A
Team Needs SF, PF and C
Scout Take “Scout's love Hardaway’s game. He is capable of playing 3 different spots on the floor and thus opening up a huge can of worms for opposing teams. Scout's felt like he was a top 3 pick in last year's draft and were surprised he stayed. However, Penny as they call him, has earned his degree and has actually improved in all areas of his game but rebounding. Should challenge for the top pick.”
Our Take: Atlanta needed help in a number of positions and at 10th they would have most likely filled a position of need, after the lottery (they went from 10th to 2nd) they choose Penny Hardaway while they didn’t’ pick a player of need they picked one of the superstars of this years draft and their GM was not going to pass on him!
3. Pistons…Jason Kidd PG 6'4'' 205 20 B- C A B C+ A
Team Needs PG, SG, PF and C
Scout Take “Kidd might be the best player in the draft. His ability to run a team is un-matched by anyone in the league right now. Add in the fact he can lock down the other team's best wing and he's destined for stardom. Top pick worthy and no latter than number 3 in the draft. After that the team who gets him gets an unreal steal.”
Our Take: There wasn’t much the Pistons didn’t need entering this draft…and after falling out of top spot after the lottery they must have been expecting the worst…How could they have known Jason Kidd would fall to them at 3? The second franchise caliber player in this draft Detroit is set for a long time!
4. Pistons (From Bucks)…Grant Hill SF 6'8'' 225 22 B B- B- C+ C A
Team Needs PG, SG, PF and C
Scout Take “Scout's love Grant Hill. Clear cut #1 option for a team. He won't have the upside as most #1 picks in the draft but he comes ready to fill seats and take a team to the playoffs by himself. Worthy of the #1 pick.”
Our Take: After much wheeling and dealing and burning up the phones lines the Pistons secured the number 4 over all pick and chose Grant Hill the third and final franchise caliber player in this draft, and the reason they gave up so much to acquire him. Grant will mostly likely become the number 1 option for Detroit as long as Jamal doesn’t mind…should be a fun Training Camp! Detroit looks loaded for years to come!
5. Mavs…B.J. Tyler PG 6'1'' 185 22 C C+ B C C B
Team Needs PG and C
Scout Take “B.J. is a gunner, first and foremost. However, he's one of the quickest point guards in this year's draft. He is a good penetrator and has good range on his jumper. He spent some time during his senior year in John Lucas's rehabilitation clinic.”
Our Take: In a surprise pick BJ Tyler was picked about 20 spots higher than most GMs and Scouts would have expected, the MAVS GM must see something ALL the other GMs did not see…but they did fill a team need and BJ was clearly high on their list.
6. Pistons (From Cavs)…Bryan Grant PF 6'9'' 258 22 C+ C- C B- B+ A
Team Needs PG, SG, PF and C
Scout Take “Scout's love Brian Grant. Every season at Xavier he's gotten better on all aspects of his game. Scout's think he still has a good amount of room to improve however scout's think it will take a lot of work. Lucky he has the work ethic to do it. Late lotto pick”
Our Take: Detroit manages to secure yet another pick in the top six and select PF Brian Grant out of Xavier, a surprise pick by most but Pistons GM informs us that Brian was targeted at 6th spot for his low post game and allstar type potential. Clearly the city of Detroit can expect some winning season very soon!
7. Kings…Glenn Robinson SF 6'8'' 225 21 B+ B- C C- B- A
Team Needs SF and C
Scout Take “IF you love offense and don't mind a guy who takes plays off on defense Robinson is your guy. Can fill it up really well, but will need to be surrounded with great defenders to make up for his lack of defense. Tweener for a forward so he may need some work to find a natural spot. None the less Robinson is #1 worthy.”
Our Take: Kings GM couldn’t be happier to land the Big Dog at 7! This is another one of those odd draft stories where a top player slips, for whatever reason, and a team scores a big time player. The Big Dogs versatility and ability to score in the paint is top notch…congrats to Kings GM and fan-base!
8. Clippers…Juwan Howard PF 6'9'' 250 22 B C+ C B C+ A
Team Needs PG, SF and PF
Scout Take “Scout's were hoping Chris Webber would come out last year so they could get a look at Howard in a more dominate role. Howard however didn't let Webber coming back stop him from dominating. He's capable of being a 20/10 player night in and night out. Starting to show scouts he could be just as deadly at the SF spot as he is at the PF spot right now. Starting to contend for the top pick in the draft. Easily top 5.”
Our Take: The second rated MICH player in this draft and we finally get to see him play without the support of the other FAB5 which is a good thing because he a tone of talent! Taking Juwan is lucky for the Clippers as they were in need of a PF so we are quiet excited to see him in a more dominate role and he has the skills to be special.
9. Nets…Jalen Rose SF 6'8'' 210 21 C+ C B- B- C+ A
Team Needs SF, PF and C
Scout Take “Scout's believe he is a poor man's Grant Hill. Should make the All-Star games a few times a year but right now scout's don't think he can become a superstar. Should still go mid to late lotto.”
Our Take: Jalen’s versatility, if it wasn’t for CWebb, would be unmatched he can play PG, SG, SF and be good at all of them! He has a great all around game and the Nets have themselves a special player great pick at number 9!
10. Warriors…Donyell Marshall PF 6'9'' 218 20 C+ B- C C+ C+ A
Team Needs PG, SG, PF and C
Scout Take “Scout's feel like Marshall is a lotto pick but considering all the big man talent he should stay one more year. Could be a great 6th man or 5th starter on a team.”
Our Take: We love Donyell’s length but his size is an issue, if he can put on size and strength he could be a special player in this league! Regardless the Warriors must be pretty happy with this pick!
11. Bulls (From Hawks)…Eddie Jones SG 6'5'' 209 22 C+ C+ C B- C+ A
Team Needs PG and SG
Scout Take “This is a classic non superstar but good player. Will make a few All-Star teams. Get you 16/7/3 a game in his prime. Can guard a team's best wing player. Might be a all defensive team player down the road.”
Our Take: Excellent pick by the Bulls at 11, Eddie can score and defend and will be a great complementary player to Scotty Pippen!
12. Spurs…Sharone Wright PF 6'11'' 260 20 B- D+ D+ B- C+ A
Team Needs PG, SF, PF and C
Scout Take “Scouts think Wright has the tools to be special but can he put everything together and dominate? He has the body to be special but hasn't lived up to what scouts think he can do. None the less he is a top 10 pick with his potential.”
Our Take: Getting Sharone out of the top ten was lucky, he has the potential to be special post player. He has great size and skill-set to development in to a great PF in this league!
13. Lakers…Lamond Murray SF 6'7'' 236 20 B B- C- C C A
Team Needs PG, SG, SF and PF
Scout Take “Murray is an interesting player in the 1994 draft. He scored over 25 a game his junior year and 20 his sophomore year. Its clear he can score. However scout's are not sure if that was due to Kidd being with him or if he can truly be a teams number one option. No doubt he is a top 10 pick.”
Our Take: Good pick by the Lakers, may not score the way he did in college to start but he has the tools to play and with experience should develop into a solid PRO.
14. 76ers…Monty Williams SF 6'8'' 225 22 C B- C- B- C A
Team Needs SF and C
Scout Take “First and foremost, he is a great scorer. He can score off the dribble, and can pull up and take a jumper. He is most effective when he comes off a screen and has great leaping ability, he can also take it to the rim.
Williams is also a very good rebounder and is very active. Needs to work on his defensive part of his game. With weight training and working on his shot, (like most rookies), he'll be a fine player in the NBA.”
Our Take: Our next surprise pick of the draft, Monty was rated as 20-25 pick on our draft boards so the 76ers GM clearly saw something the other GMs did not. One thing Monty does have is solid potential and he is a solid mid range shooter and is a decent zone defender.
15. Sonics…Wesley Person SG 6'6'' 195 22 C+ B+ C+ C- C B
Team Needs PG, SG and C
Scout Take “Scout's have been on this player since older Brother Chuck has been pumping him up. He's had such a good year that NBA commish Mops has made a few trips while on the road running the Suns to stop by and watch this guy play. Might be mid lotto but should go late to mid 1st round.”
Our Take: We expected Wesley to go a little sooner so this is a solid value pick at 15 and fills a position of need for the Sonics! Wesley has an excellent outside shot and if they can manage to resign Gary Payton they should make one heck of a back court!
16. Bulls…Charlie Ward PG 21 6'2'' 190 C C+ B- B- C- B
Team Needs PG and SG
Scout Take “NBA Scout's were glad to see this Heisman winner not get drafted in the 1993 NFL 1st Round and thus allowing Ward to skip football and go to basketball. His overall athletic ability will keep him around for a while. Might not be a starter for every team but could work his way into a starting role if given the proper training.”
Our Take: Good pick up by the Bulls, Mark Price isn’t getting any younger and Charlie is an excellent support/backup PG. We like his strength from the PG spot and being a Ex-FB player his toughness will be a nice addition.
17. Mavs…Eric Montross C 22 7'0'' 275 C+ C- C- B- C+ B
Team Needs PG and C
Scout Take “Montross will never be a star in the league even though he is a two time All-American and champion at the college level. He has almost maxed out his potential. That said, he should be able to come in and help a team as their 7th or 8th man off the bench and give good minutes down low.”
Our Take: Mavs needed a Center and that is exactly what Eric brings. Being one of the better Centers in the draft, and although his potential is limited, he is more than capable of being a presence in the middle, good role player teammate and he will bring NCAA championship experience!
18. Bucks…Khalid Reeves SG 6'3'' 207 22 C B C C C A
Team Needs PG, SG and C
Scout Take “Reeves was a boarder line 2nd round pick going into his senior season and then exploded for 24 ppg as a senior. Scout's are unsure of how talented he can be or if his senior year was a fluke. Some scout's think he could be a late lotto pick while others think he’s late 1st to mid 2nd.”
Our Take: Bucks fill two needs with this pick out of Arizona. Khalid can score but the real question is can he play the PG position in the NBA we like his chances and is a good risk reward type pick.
19. Timberwolves…Zeljko Rebraca SF 6'11'' 235 19 C+ C+ C+ C+ C+ C
Team Needs PG and C
Scout Take NA
Our Take: Is a dominant center in Europe at a young age and has decided to take his game over to the NBA to test his skills. Solid post defender, nice mid-range and hook shot. Some worry if he can stay healthy competing with the rigors of the NBA.
20. Knicks…Aaron McKie SG 6'5'' 209 22 C C+ C+ B- C B
Team Needs SG and SF
Scout Take “Temple coach John Chaney has called McKie "a warrior" his highest compliment. McKie has great size for a shooting guard and is very strong. However, he is not exceptionally quick nor is he a great ball-handler.
Offensively, McKie is a strong player, with NBA three point range. He is not afraid to take the big shot. He has all the tools to score both inside and out and with size, he will be able to take smaller SG's inside and shot over them outside. If he learns to handle the ball better he will have it all.
He was a good defender in Chaney's matchup zone defense. The matchup will help him be prepared for the NBA because the matchup is very aggressive and forces him to cover someone man to man in his zone.
McKie should be the second or third shooting guard taken in the draft.”
Our Take: We like this pick for the Knicks a lot and is a very good value at 20, Aaron appears to be ready to compete and help the Knicks in their defensive hard nosed style system and should add an offensive as well
21. Bulls…Andrei Fetisov PF 6'10'' 220 20 C+ C D+ C C B
Team Needs PG, SG and C
Scout Take “GMs like Andrei’s size and skillset, the question will those skills and size translate to the NBA? He has a decent inside game, can defend and rebound but he will need to put on weight and add strength, should be a good second round pickup.”
Our Take: The Bulls, I’m sure envision him as the “poor man’s” Toni Kukoc, and if he develops who knows. Andrei will need to add weight and strength but he has proven in the Spanish leagues that he can play. Good value at 21 but we are surprised the Bulls didn’t go with a bigger body…but potential can be very alluring!
22. Spurs (From Heat)…Clifford Rozier PF 6'11'' 254 21 B- C+ C- B- C B
Team Needs PG, SF, PF and C
Scout Take “Left to freelance, Rozier can put up some great numbers but he can have off games. Offensively Rozier can take the ball an after an dazzling array of moves, score over any player. This will hurt him in the NBA. Defensively, Rozier sometimes takes plays off and He’s a great shot-blocker
Our Take: A boom or bust type pick, Cliff has great tools the question is can he put it together? That being said, at 22 he is well worth the risk!
23. Cavs…Eric Mobley PF 6'11'' 250 22 C+ C C+ C+ C+ B
Team Needs PG, SG and SF
Scout Take “Mobley has an NBA centers body. He is big and is not afraid to use his body. He is a strong shot-blocker and good rebounder. He does have a tendency to get into foul trouble. Offensively, Mobley can dunk but that’s about it. Look for him to be taken in the mid to late first round by a team looking for bulk in the middle.”
Our Take: The CAVS didn’t necessarily need a center but what they get here is a good one. Every team needs a presence in the middle and Eric’s shot-blocking and rebounding are a big part of his game. Good pick at 23!
24. Cavs…Eric Piatkowski SG 6'7'' 215 22 C- B+ C+ C- C- B
Team Needs PG, SG and SF
Scout Take “Piatkowski is one of the best shooters in the league and will get picked mid to late 1st strictly for that. Don't expect more from him however as he wont do anything else.”
Our Take Great pick by the CAVS at 24! Eric will be a excellent long range shooter and that is a great asset for any team!
25. Nuggets…Tony Dumas SG 6'6'' 190 22 C+ C D+ C C B
Team Needs SG and PF
Scout Take “Dumas is an unheralded player with big time skills and a good outside shot. He has excellent size of the shooting guard sport. The postseason camps will be very important for Dumas, as they will allow scouts to watch him play against top-flight competition. Dumas averages 26 points per game to rank 8th in the country in scoring.”
Our Take Good value pick at 25 and a good 6th man type of player.
26. Clippers…Lawernce Funderburke PF 21 6'9'' 240 C+ D- D C B- C
Team Needs PG, SF and PF
Scout Take “Funderburke has the body that scouts like and the tools to go along with it. However, like many big men in this class, he needs to show more consistency. Funderburke has been slowed by off-season knee problems and some scouts question his heart and desire. He has long arms and has been compared to Sam Perkins. Funderburke is a good inside scorer, but needs to improve his range.”
Our Take: Every team can use size and that’s what the Clippers get and Lawrence will help with his strength down low and rebounding ability.
27. Cavs…Dickey Simpkins PF 22 6'9'' 250 C+ C- D+ C D B
Team Needs PG, SG and SF
Scout Take “Dimpkins is a good inside scorer with a skilled all-around game. He runs the court well and has a good shooting touch.”
Our Take: Dickey might compete for a starting spot right away or be a good come off the bench player, either way, his good all around game will help the CAVS down low and defend in the paint. Excellent late round pick!
Best Steals of the Draft?
Jason Kidd…well maybe not a steal but a surprise at 3!
Glenn Robinson…How does this tpe of talent slip to 7th!
Clifford Rozier…was much higher on many GMs draft boards.
HM Eric Piatkowski…like Rosier went a lot lower than he should have!
Biggest WINNERS and LOSERS of the Draft?
WINNERS
Detroit Pistons…Three picks in the top 6 and two of them could have went number one over all, what else needs to be said! Well done!
Washington Bullets…scored the number overall and got there man!
LOSERS
Dallas Mavericks…BJ Tyler at 4? Very be reach, I think this is why GMs get fired! We hope we are wrong for both their GM and for Tyler’s to prove us wrong!
Who made the best deals on draft day?
Detroit Pistons...3 picks in top 6!
Chicago Bulls…from no picks to 3 in Round one and drafting Eddie Jones!
San Antonio Spurs…picking up Wright and Rozier good potential in both picks!
Who will be this years hidden gem?
Zeljko Rebraca SF 6'11'' 200 19 C+ C+ C+ C+ C+ C
Dontonio Wingfield PF 6'8'' 256 18 B- C- D+ C C- B
Voshon Lenard SG 6'4'' 205 20 C B D+ D C B
Kenya Wilkins PG 5'9'' 189 22 C B- C C- C- B

Washington Bullets…scored the number overall and got there man!
